Triptych Idea

Having absolutely no idea what it was when I heard it, I wasn't so enthusiastic to try it, however, when i learned it was just 'split screen' my view had changed.

I love the idea of narratives being told through multiple screens.

Our brief was to create a narrative across three screens; but within one computer monitor.

The only split screen i could think of that i already knew of was 'Hey there Delilah' by Plain White T's

I liked the multiple narrative playing at the same time. Which led us to think up our idea.

Myself, Gemma and Becca, had an idea of doing an Autumn inspired video considering it has just approached.

We then all listed ideas of what we could include within it. I suggested we keep to a theme, so being Autumn i thought it'd be nice to have Orange as a colour theme.

As with that, Leaves, and pumpkins and halloween. came to mind. We then began to think of other creative shots we could include within this, to give it more depth, as we wanted more than 3 clips playing on the screen at one time. We listed ideas such as;

Coffee- the steam coming off it in a CU shot would looks great, mixed with one's breath from the cold weather

Halloween- pumpkins, leaves twigs, children playing, costumes, nightimes, moon, earie feel 

Bonfire Night- fireworks, spearklers, binfire, gloves, friends, gathering

Rain/Umbrellas- raindrops falling, puddles, umberella shadows

Fire/Candles- flames, orange light, warmth

Its all coming to an end.

So, the final year, I can't believe how quick the past 2 years have gone. As much as I've hated all the work an stress of deadlines, I have absolutely loved my experience at uni so far, and i will be really upset when it all comes to and end, because after that I'll have to choose a path, and being the most indecisive person ever, its going to be a hard decision.

 

Just think in 6 month time i will have finished all my work, It's actually quite terrifying that i'll have to go into the real world, and actually get a job, AHH. Though part of me is quite excited about it.

I've got really good feeling about this final year, I've made some amazing friends, and can't wait to spend more time with them this year. Even though its actually just dawned on me that I have so much work to do, including an 8000 word dissertation and then a main media artefact for my Production Project(which I'm quite looking forward too!) and then other, but I'm not too worried about them!

My summer was great, especially doing the 2 week placement at Lime Pictures. I'd never actually watched Hollyoaks prior to going, well I had but it was about 4 years ago, so i was a bit worried about how that might pan out. Having said this, after my time there, I'm now the biggest fan! I can't stop watching it. I also got put in charge of designing their promotion posters for the '6 weeks of summer' period, which was amazing. I did get thrown in the deep end form the first day, but i think that's what motivated me more to do well and try to impress them. I got to do a lot of Photoshop work which i was extremely pleased about!

Moving into this final year, I want to prove to myself that i can work hard, as last year i know i didn't try my best, and i let work slip under and pile up. I'm going to try and not to leave everything till last minute, though i know i will, because i say that every single year since I've started. However this year involved a lot of independent study, which I'm thrilled about.

I prefer working by myself as I get far to distracted working in a team, and I do have a tendency to want to take over, or get irritated if i don't like an idea. I just think being able to focus on my own work will improve my work, and it'll allow me to be more creative within my ideas and skills- as a lot of the time, when working in a group, you have to share processes such as editing or filming, and well i never usually get the chance to fully focus on editing. So it'll be nice to experiment this year- especially as in this module, we'll be focusing on some new techniques which I'm excited about!

Productive day/Essay deadline!

Well this is going to be my last post before its deadline day.

Today in convergence media teamwork, we finalised our idea for the transmedia story we will be creating.

Its quite complex, and although it was quite confusing at times, diving into the story to far, it was actually really fun to develop.

So basically I think its better starting off backwards for me to explain.

~A Girl called Auora (the main character) is the daughter of the Girl in the Pearl Earring painting, and her father is Johannes Vermeer, the painter.

~To escape the life of being a child out of adultery, the mother sends the girl through one of the father’s paintings. Gives the girl a necklace with a symbol on as a keepsake, which will play a big part in the story.

~Child ends up in modern day, in a woman’s attic. The woman finds her, unaware of where she has come from and keeps the child out of pitty, but doesn’t know that the girl has come from the painting.

It then fast forwards and the grandmother has died, Auora is clearing out the attic and finds painting with the same symbol on the frame as the symbol on her necklace learns forward and the necklace connects with the symbol, transporting her.

* The symbol is also on her necklace that her grandmother gave her as child, family heirloom. Links to the symbol on the paintings frame.

* Thinks the necklace is a family heirloom, is actually given to her by the painter of the girl with the pearl earring (her)

And this is where we will begin creating the story

To begin We will create a website using WIX, and produce a video clip to introduce the audience to the story

* Starts with a detective placing missing posters around the city. Viral campaign to find this girl. Tweets asking if people have seen her/Shared posts on Facebook/News report. QR code on the poster gives you all the information.

* Starts on the website with a video of the girl in her attic, walking towards the painting, goes to touch it and then screen flashes white… Website then opens.

* Website is from the detective (like a wall about an investigation) He’s pinned it all on a site than an audience can explore.

* Starts to unravel the story of the girl after finding letters in the attic, written decades before. The letters are signed by the girl.

* Digging deeper finds a newspaper article, featuring a picture of the girl, the newspaper is from 1830 (pick a date and backstory).

* Facebook of the girl, her friends have been writing on her wall asking where she is/Tweets from the detective trying to understand what’s going on (tweets his confusion/frustration)

Here is some of the plot we need ot furtherly develop, and the characters:

Stumbling around the asylum trying to figure her surrounds out, she spots a man in a cell surrounded by paintings, hoping to figure out what is going on she approaches him, learning he is the painter of The Scream [Thought to be mad with his ramblings of a girl from the future, he knows the truth of the girls ability and explains to her why she is able to travel through the paintings]. Needing a way to leave the asylum the painter hands her Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait with a bandaged ear.

Transported to 1889 France she finds herself face to face with the man himself and discovers he does not have depression like believed, that story is in fact a cover up for the truth. Whilst showing her the painting of Liberty Leading the People a gunshot ripples through the painting, one destroys Van Gough’s ear – the other the fatal gunshot that kills him – not suicide.

I think we're going to have fun creating the story and the world inside it!

APPLIED MEDIA RESEARCH

Also, in relation to the Applied Media Report, I'm in quite a good place at the moment. Though i do leave things last minute. I don't have that much to do. I have all my research collected, and a detailed plan of what i need to include. I think its just the though of having to write the other half of it. Its a very time consuming process.

The Report and the research into the question has actually been a great experience for me.  I loved finding out whats available in terms of new content, and learning new things that exist, such as 'dual apps' 

I genuinely though i was all up to date with technology, but honestly the amount of things i've learnt a long the way is astonishing.

I just hope I've managed to make sense of all the research, as that's really may weak point... but hopefully I have done enough to get a decent mark!

Though I haven't enjoyed this year as much as the first, I think I've learnt more in relation to what the media is turning into and how its developing, and while its really exciting, its all very complex, but i can't wait to see what the future holds!

Transmedia Storytelling!

So I've found this to be quite intriguing, though i feel like we should have done this at the start of 2nd year because its really quite a creative project and i think i would have been so much more excited and involved, whereas now i feel like its going to be rushed, especially with all the deadlines. but anywho, aside from that, i am looking forward to expanding on our reasearching and developing our story onto screen.

So in brief, the idea is to come up with a ‘natively’ Transmedia fiction, which is to be developed within four media elements, such as: videos, maps, images, games,apps, audio and social media.

My group consists of myself, Becca and Gemma, and I'm extremly happy to be working with them, as i think we're all at the same level with ideas and creativity. Initially our first idea was just an outline to get us going, and looking into it within more depth.

We each listed things that we maybe wanted to incorporate into our idea, some a bit out there, but it got us thinking more creatively, so here they are:

Differnt alternative universe

Step back in time

Animals

Thriller?

So with that , our concept developed quite quickly. We should start off with a girl, around our age group, as we think people in our demographic today our more likely to participate within these types of story telling, however, we our focusing more on the female gender, with the main protagonist being a woman, around the age of 20-23.

So could an attic come into it? A paining?

What if she finds an old paining and she gets transported into this whole other world, and ultimately the story is her travelling through different paintings, within the painining, finding clues on the way to understand why she's there, and to escape.

BAM!

Its wasn't very detailed but we had a story

So i suggested, when this woman finds the painting, in an attic, maybe a family relative as died, or gone missing and she is being forced to go through their belongings, and she stumbles upon it.. maybe the girl in the painting could be the girls grandmother, or her sister, or her maybe in a different life? because she finds the 'original' in like her attic or her mothers (whos recently died) attic. shes freaked out because it looks exactly like her..

*UPDATE

we found this was far too complex a story to begin, however, in the end we have managed to create a detailed story.

We need to get the audience involved, so the idea is..

To start off with a short video explaining the start of the story, leading them into the world, up tot he point where she is standing in front of a painting

CV Workshop and talk

So today was the Cv Workshop and the Fact talk.

Today was kind of a strange day because I went into it thinking, hey, I know how to write a cv, and honestly, I have nothing to put on a 'media CV anyway' but honestly it had made me come to the realization that i just really need to knuckle down now.

For a while, I hadn't known what i wanted out of this course, and where it was going to take me, so I was unmotivated, and just didn't know what i ultimately needed to do, or what i was interested in anymore.

However. I know that if i want to achieve something I need to try hard, I need to focus, and I need to be confident in what i'm doing.

I've now developed my cv, and i'm looking into to smaller opportunities for over the next 6 months to help me with the work based learning week, where i will have to do 80 hours working in a media industry.

I'm actually quite looking forward to the experience, because the past year i haven't felt very involved within the media, and if i have't really learnt anything new. So I need to put myself out there if i want to learn and get somewhere!

So here's to finally being motivated!!!

Digital Media Cultures

Our Second assignment of the year is a 20 word report split into two. As we wil be working in a group of 4, however, 2 of us will work together to write one of these:

1000 word literature review
(5 academic sources: either chapters from a book or a journal). A correctly formatted bibliography.

1000 word synopsis of dissertation to include:
Title/hypothesis; Introduction; 3 chapters; conclusion.

Dave and I chose to do the dissertation, and Ashleigh and Lois did the review.

It took a while for us to get an idea on what well all wanted to write about however, we chose to do about the DAB switchover. Having touched on it briefly when i was in sixth form, I thought it would good because i could direct our group on certain tangents we could research such as radio and how that has been affected, not just Television.

UPDATE

** 11th Feb

The majority of the research we got came from online journals, as when looking for books, we couldn't find anything specific for our needs, as they were very broadly subjected.

We all worked together really on reading all the notes and what we wanted to include, though once the review was done, Dave and I got to work, writing the synopsis.

Though we did find that we were repeating ourselves quite a lot because I don;t think the other two collaborated on what each other were writing, as they mostly contained the same information, so it was hard for me and Dave to write something different about each reference.

Its all handed in now however, and are awaiting the results.

I think as team we did all work good together however, due to aAhleigh being and away i think it malfunctioned a bit because they both sort of wrote about the same ideas..

Presentation Time!

I'd been looking forward to this presentation for a while, because in the end, I think we got really into it, and did and amazing job on the Prezi and research. Although we did in fact have TOO much information on our slides, so we had to cut some of our facts out, and during the presentation, only mention the most important details.

I'm possibly one of the least confident people when talking in front of somebody, or making a presentation, however, I think I did okay with speaking, although I did have my back to the camera the whole way through. Although that's mainly because I couldn't see as I didn't have my glasses! (my own fault)

But i guess what made it more fun and enjoyable was that we dressed up as characters form the shows we individually researched!
